If you are born again but don’t speak in tongues, does this mean that you don’t have the Holy Spirit? This is the worry of some believers. Some pastors teach this. The truth is this: we receive the Holy Spirit when we believe the Gospel, repent and get baptized. When a believer gets born of the water and the Spirit, the Spirit of God descends on him and indwells him. The Spirit of God continues to increase in him as he grows daily in the Lord. Remember how the Holy Ghost descended like a dove and lighted upon Jesus Christ immediately He was baptized in River Jordan (Matthew 3:16). Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift. The Holy Ghost baptism is an endowment with power from on high, which is a release power and spiritual gifts. (“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49) This is different from receiving the Holy Ghost at baptism.
